designing with ascentia:
ideas and information to build on

How do I select the style, color, and finish that are right for both my home and my personal tastes?

To help you define “your” style, The Home Depot design experts from your local area will be able to guide you through the selection process. But before speaking to a designer, we suggest you start on your own by looking through design magazines for inspiration and clipping magazine photos as reference. This is a great way to convey your tastes and thoughts to your designer. You can also use Ascentia’s online Interactive Style Explorer to browse styles and be inspired.

We've just purchased our first home and we want to redesign the kitchen. Where do we begin? Should we start by selecting the cabinets or appliances first?

The first step in your Ascentia design process should be to set up an initial consultation with your local The Home Depot designer. Before selecting new appliances, first consider how you currently use your kitchen and decide if that works for you or not. Just keep in mind a few key elements. For example, changing from a range to a cook top and wall oven will require more space and take up countertop surface. Your designer can work with you to determine what size appliances will function best for you in your space. Ultimately though, the process of selecting appliances and cabinetry occurs at the same time. A cabinet layout should never be finalized and ordered without knowing the final appliance selection. To do so could cause major problems with installation later on.

How do I select flooring that looks good with my cabinetry selection?

One rule of thumb for selecting flooring for your kitchen is to try and stay a few shades lighter or a few shades darker than the finish on your selected cabinets. This is a great way to best complement the door style and finish you select for your kitchen remodel. The goal is to select items that complement each other but aren’t necessarily matching. However, this is a personal preference and will vary depending upon your design objective.

If I purchase materials for a new kitchen at The Home Depot, where can I find a qualified and trusted installer?

Licensed, bonded, and insured installers are available through The Home Depot in your area. Consult your designer at The Home Depot about the installation services provided to you in your area.

Will choosing my personal contemporary taste over a conservative design style impact the resale value of my home?

Whether you select a design style that is intended for your enjoyment or to appeal to a future buyer, your Return On Investment percentage still remains constant. In fact, recent statistics show that a remodeled kitchen can add up to as much as 25% to the resale value of your home.

We love stainless steel appliances and black appliances. How do we choose cabinetry to coordinate with our appliances?

Ascentia provides many door style and finish options to complement today’s growing appliance trends. Selecting from Ascentia’s exclusive line of hardware to complement your appliance finish is a simple way to tie the two elements of your design together.

What are my door style and finish options with Ascentia?

Ascentia offers a variety of style and finish options to fit almost any preference. From classic to contemporary and everything in-between, Ascentia offers wood doors, laminate doors, and even painted options in various finishes to bring your dream kitchen or bath to life.

What is the kitchen “work triangle” and why is it important?

The kitchen work triangle is a technique used to determine the most useful and functional distance between your three major kitchen work areas; range, refrigerator and sink. Consult your designer at The Home Depot for advice on maximizing the efficiency of the work triangle in your kitchen.

What is open-frame cabinetry?

Open-frame cabinetry is a construction style that has been around for a long time. Without a face frame on the cabinet box, you gain extra storage space through wider drawer boxes and access to all the inside corners for easier cleaning.

How can I prepare my kitchen, my family, and myself for a renovation?

First, understand that remodeling can be a messy job and prepare your family for some upcoming inconveniences. Talk to your designer and installers at The Home Depot about temporary kitchen workstations during the messy tearing out and installation process. Expect to use your microwave for meals during this time and possibly wash dishes in your laundry room or even a bathroom. And remember: It is a great excuse to relax and go out to eat for dinner!
